In this day and age a lot of people use a VPN (virtual private network) when accessing the internet. Whether it’s to access location restricted content, securing data over the internet, or not to be subjected to mass surveillance, it’s likely that not a lot of users know how VPN came to existence.
This article is a brief explanation about the start of the VPN and how it was implemented.
When was the VPN brought to life?
The start of the VPN dates almost back the start of the internet. First implications of a VPN was introduced by a Microsoft employee in 1996 when they started building the Peer-to-Peer Tunneling Protocol (PPTP). This was used to build a secure connection between two entities and effectively made its way to modern VPNs.
A VPN is a private connection set over the internet that includes several different protocols which was developed over the years. To learn more in depth about VPN protocols give this a read. All these protocols made possible the action of connecting remotely to a private network over the internet.
The beginning: VPN in business
Initially the VPN was introduced and implemented in big companies and organizations. These organizations needed a secure medium to communicate and share files between offices and for employees to be able to access files remotely.
Physically connecting offices was difficult and expensive which led to the use of the VPN. This opened the doors for easier and safer communication in between the company without any risk of unauthorized access to sensitive data.
Employees were able to communicate between each other and use the company files without physically being in the office. With time more powerful encryption methods came into play making the communications much more secure.
During the early 2000’s there were many security breaches which was a key moment for the VPN technology. This made the everyday internet users aware of the risks and threats online, and stumbled upon the VPN.
VPN for all users: Beginning of a new era
Even though this technology was not intended for general public use, companies saw the threats online and started providing a solution to end users. Hence the birth of VPN providers like VPN Surf came into the market to provide a tool which was meant for the elite, accessible to everyday internet users.
We all have been growing with the internet and with time the threats increase with amazing developments. Internet started being censored, many hackers started exploiting others, and getting targeted by location based advertisement and being under constant watch by governments.
Once people started seeing the issues on the internet, and knowing that they no longer have the privacy and security, VPNs became a go to solution. A VPN creates a secure internet inside the internet.
